Welcome to the website of
Tools for Teams and training network
The Tools4Teams project aims to contribute to safer and more effective care by studying the innovative tools that teams need to perform optimally in complex healthcare situations.
Effective patient care relies on effective teamwork by healthcare professionals. In this context, the Horizon 2020 Tools4Teams project will study the innovative tools that teams need to increase their situational awareness of and responsiveness to complex healthcare situations. Both in centralised acute care settings and in decentralised chronic care settings there is an urgent need to deeper understand team performance. The information will be applied in the design and implementation of innovative tools in training and real-time application. To train the next generation of entrepreneurial, collaborative experts, Tools4Teams will bring together expertise from social and technical sciences, human-centred design, education, and clinical specialties alongside non-academic partners. Task Requirements, Workflow Processes and Technological Constraints in Virtual Multidisciplinary Tumour Board Meetings: Insights for Extended Reality-Based Solutions in Thoracic Oncology (Adamietz et al., 2026)
Multidisciplinary tumour boards are essential for collaborative decision-making in cancer care. As tumour boards increasingly take place via videoconferencing across institutions, they improve accessibility and collaboration while also introducing new technological and interaction-related challenges.
This study examined how videoconference multidisciplinary tumour boards function in thoracic oncology through observations of 5 videoconference meetings covering 146 patient cases and interviews with 7 clinicians. The findings identified key workflow steps and frequent interruptions caused by connectivity, audio, and imaging issues, which interrupted case discussions and limited interaction. The study also explored clinicians’ perspectives on future extended reality-supported tumour board environments and highlighted opportunities to better support multidisciplinary teamwork in oncology.
